Medical expenses can also be a hindrance after a spine injury. The average yearly expenses of a spinal cord injury can vary greatly. Costs will depend on the severity. But, this can range from $379,000 to $1.1 million, according to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC). We will fight for you to make sure you can pay off your medical expenses.

One of the reasons back injuries can be so costly is that they often are long-term issues. Some back injuries do not present themselves immediately, but they can worsen as treatment is delayed. Other injuries often require ongoing medical care or result in chronic pain. This means more of your time and money is spent on doctor’s visits.

What Causes Spinal Cord Injuries?

Back injuries happen when there is trauma to your vertebrae, ligaments, or discs. It can also apply to the spinal cord itself. Your spinal cord is the group of nerves and tissue that your vertebrae protect by stacking around it. The vertebrae themselves make up your spine. Your spine extends from the base of your brain and goes all the way down your neck and back, right above the buttocks.

According to the NSCISC, car accidents were the leading cause of spinal cord injuries. Car accidents accounted for 38.2% of all back injuries since 2015. Other common causes of spinal cord injuries are:

Determining and Measuring Spinal Cord Injuries

Doctors determine spinal cord injuries with methods developed by the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI). The ISNCSCI uses three scores:

These measure your mobility and strength, feeling, and if an injury is complete or incomplete. A complete spinal cord injury is when there is a total loss of function and feeling below the injury. An incomplete spinal cord injury is when there is still partial feeling below the injury.

The ASIA Impairment Scale will assign a grade A-E to an injury. The grades are measured by the severity of the injury. This is based on the level of both motor function and feeling.

Grade A: Complete impairment with no motor or sensory function.

Grade B: Incomplete impairment. No sensory function, but some motor function remains.

Grade C: Incomplete impairment. Fifty percent of the patients’ muscles are considered less than a grade 3 (for example, the patient can not lift their limbs).

Grade D: Incomplete impairment. Fifty percent of the patients’ muscles are considered more than a grade 3 (for example, the patient can lift their limbs).

Grade E: Normal functions with no impairment to motor or sensory function.

If your doctor determines that you are suffering from back injuries, our legal team can help you recover damages. These can include pain and suffering, medical bills, lost wages, and/or wrongful death.

Types of Spinal Cord Injuries

Per the NSCISC, approximately 17,900 people suffer from spinal cord injuries each year. Common back injuries include, but are not limited to:

According to the NSCISC, the most common type of spinal cord injury is incomplete tetraplegia. This accounts for 47.4% of spinal cord injuries since 2015. Tetraplegia is when there is a loss of sensory and/or motor function in both your arms and legs.

Another common injury is whiplash, especially in car accidents when the patient is rear-ended. More than two million Americans suffer from whiplash every year. This occurs when your head is quickly thrown backward and then forward. Whiplash injuries are often detected with x-rays, MRIs, and CT scans if a patient suffers from neck pain.
